A blue or blank screen during a Remote Desktop (RDP) session is a common annoyance, usually caused by one of a few things: closing a session instead of properly logging out, a slow logon process, or connecting as a different user than the one already logged in.
Method 1: Restart Windows Explorer
Often the desktop itself has simply failed to render, even though the underlying session is still running. You can usually fix this without disconnecting:
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager directly on the blue/blank screen. - Click File → Run new task, type
explorer.exe, and press Enter.
Alternatively, under the Processes tab, find Windows Explorer, select it, and click Restart.
Method 2: Adjust Your RDP Client Settings
If the issue keeps recurring, it may be related to how your RDP client is rendering the session:
- Disable bitmap caching in your Remote Desktop client’s display settings.
- Check that the MTU size configured on the server, your local client, and any network equipment in between are consistent — a mismatch can cause display corruption over RDP.
